So I'm at a party and run into a guy from my hometown. We're sort of acquainted but don't know each other all that well.

He's drinking Johnny Walker straight out of the bottle, and makes a big deal of offering some to me in front of everyone. He's probably thinking about what a huge nerd I was in high school, or has noticed that I'm not drinking much at the party.

He has no way of knowing what a raging drunk I was in university, or that I had a brief flirtation with single malt a few years back. Oddly enough I'd never tried Johnny Walker before.

So I theatrically sniff the opening of the bottle, take a slug, swallow, and take a deep breath so as not to waste a single fume.

He laughs, I've passed the test.

"So why did you sniff the bottle?"

"Well, I want to actually taste it and enjoy it. If all I wanted was to get drunk, I could just drink fucking mouthwash."

I didn't read the label or anything. It tasted quite OK to me, but at that point I'd already been drinking at a moderate clip for 16 hours.
Whisky snobbery isn't my thing, I'd take that blended Johnny Walker far ahead of genuine single malts like Glenfiddich or Talisker.
I bought a 40 of Glenfiddich at a duty free store to try it out, and couldn't believe how bland it was. Every 6 months or so I'd run out of liquor and say "Oh, it couldn't have been that bad, let's try the Glenfiddich again", and every time it really was that bland. I probably used as much of that bottle disinfecting cuts as I drank.
The Talisker otoh has taste to spare, but I guess it just isn't my thing.
