Troll Jr and SWWSHSOTL took their black belt tests over these past couple of weeks, and they passed with flying colors - and Troll Jr did it with a broken toe.

SWWSHSOTL was also a surprise - she did extremely well, got right in there and aced her techniques and katas, and didn't fuss about the sparring - even though she forgot to bring a chest protector! (Eventually, the instructors noticed and made her put one on.)

We knew Michael wasn't going to have a problem with the tests, so he decided to create one by jamming his foot a few days before the tests began. We had him ice it, put it up, and so on, but it insisted on turning lots of interesting colors, anyway. Things got exciting the day of the sparring final, when a doctor called us to tell us that (a) yes the foot was broken where the big toe connects to the foot and (b) he wasn't allowed to finish the tests until he saw a specialist. So, we dragged him out of school, and found a orthopedic surgeon who looked at the x-rays and said, "Eh. Just tape the two toes together and bring him back afterwards." So, he went in and did well - although the tape flew off when he round housed an opponent. I told him to lay off on the kicks, but apparently he didn't listen

Here's a picture of the broken foot, for posterity

To see the break, look at the second bone of the big toe. There's a small piece chipped off. Not a really big deal, but the doctors were worried that if it moved out of place he would have to have surgery to straighten it out again.

Maybe you should try wrasslin' instead of that kung-fu stuff.

Oh, straighten the toe out. Never mind.

I'm sure martial arts are violent enough. by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #3 Mon Nov 19, 2007 at 11:50:20 AM EST
Just a bit less gay since the opponents are an arms length apart instead of locked in a sweaty clinch.

Hmmm... Where does chess club by greyrat (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Nov 19, 2007 at 12:50:12 PM EST
fall in those criteria? They do lots of thrashing of each other, and being state ranked or even nationally ranked could be construed as pretty sexy...

Kneecapping, especially, is useful. Groin shots less so.

Although, I should point out that hamsters vastly prefer the iphone to flip phones, since they have a hard time getting flip phones to open with out snapping shut on their little necks.

More medical evidence is what we need around here. It spruces the whole place up and gives it that intellectual hospital smell!
